One of the magical qualities of street art is its ability to provide a break from our humdrum routines. It can appear when you least expect it, in places you’d never think art would be.

Street art is often meant to open your eyes or make you think. But some has no other purpose than to bring joy to your life. The tricksters who make it aren’t rich or famous. Many of them buy their own materials and risk their own records—all to elicit smiles from strangers.

The Woolly Mammoth, inspired by the artwork of Chase Lobley and crafted by the late artist Jonathon Casey, is one such work. No photography can do it justice. If you’re in Buffalo, you simply must take a look.

It was created in association with Buffalo’s Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, a cooperative environment that supports adults with disabilities in their artistic development, and one of the most wonderful organizations in town.
