The Magicians

Artist: Chuck Tingley

Medium: Spray Paint and Stencil

Location: 293-391 Exchange Street

Stencils allow street artists to create multiple identical images with speed and precision. They can be in and out in a flash, allowing them to operate anonymously while seeming to be everywhere at once.

Blek le Rat, a 1980’s Parisian street artist, is one of the originators of the movement. His most famous “student” is Banksy. Much of Shepard Fairey’s early Andre the Giant Has a Posse and OBEY work was also done with stencils.

The fish shown here are the work of Buffalo artist and friend of the UB Arts Collaboratory, Chuck Tingley, who saw the “dirty gray” paint that had been used to cover up tags and thought it would make the perfect home for a school of “dead fish.”
