The Secret Societies

Chalk Snake Woman

Artist: MJ Myers

Medium: Chalk on Brick

Location: 162 Kentucky Street

There isn’t one single type of street artist. Instead, there are countless characters driven by their own unique motivations. If you have an image of a street artist in your head, go ahead and get rid of it. You can never tell which of your fellow citizens might have spray paint in their backpacks or chalk in their pockets.

Most street art calls out to the world. But some chooses to whisper. It’s meant for an audience that may not include you. No matter how hard you try to make sense of it, its meaning will never be clear.

This is street art you have to search for. You may pass by a hundred times before you finally see it. When you do, you’ll get a glimpse of lost worlds and secret societies. There were people here once, and this place meant something to them. Who they were and what they did here are left to your imagination.

The Chalk Snake Woman shown above marks the site of former artist studios. Before being forced to relocate, one of the artists, MJ Myers, left his mark on one of the building’s walls. Drawn with chalk, his Snake Woman’s image was never meant to last more than a few days. It has survived for well over three years.
